Petter is a senior researcher in the MECW research area Environment and Sustainable Development in the Middle East, and also the director of Lund University GIS Centre (since 1995).

He is a geographer and a spatial modeller. Since 1986 he has been working with research and education in Europe and developing countries (mainly Africa, Asia and Middle East). Petter’s research is focusing on GIS in environment, health studies, implementation of GIS and pedagogic research e.g. in social sciences (regional development and economy), as well as on technical issues (modelling and algorithm development).
