Arabic Language Courses

CMES offers three Arabic language courses during the autumn of 2024:
- A1, Modern Standard Arabic for Beginners, Part I
- A2, Modern Standard Arabic for Beginners, Part I
- B1, Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic, Part I

The courses are exclusively offered for Lund University students and staff interested in working and conducting research in Arabic speaking countries.

The courses provide practical linguistic knowledge and cultural background for students and staff who want to study Arabic for work, fieldwork and/or research purposes. Participants will learn to read and write basic Arabic and be able to use the language in everyday situations. In addition to learning Modern Standard Arabic, participants will also get insights into cultures and traditions of the Arabic speaking world. The courses are based on a combination of lectures, individual studies and seminars.

Please note that there are a limited number of places for each class. We will let you know whether your application has been successful after the application deadline has passed. 


A1, Modern Standard Arabic for Beginners, Part I

This 12-week course in Modern Standard Arabic (Basic User, level A1) is offered during the autumn semester of 2024. The course is free of charge and no credits will be awarded. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course. More information can be found in the course description:

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the course, participants must either be employed at Lund University or enrolled as students at Lund University. No previous knowledge of Arabic is necessary.

Application Procedure

Participants should apply to attend the course by sending an email to info [at] cme [dot] lu [dot] se (info[at]cme[dot]lu[dot]se) no later than Wednesday September 11, 2024. Please write “A1 Arabic Course” in the subject line and include the following information:

  • full name;
  • reason for applying (e.g., fieldwork, research, internship); and
  • if you are employed at LU, please include your LUCAT id. If you are a student at LU, please include your date of birth.

If your application is successful, you will receive additional information before the course commences.


A2, Modern Standard Arabic for Beginners, Part I

This 12-week course in Modern Standard Arabic (Basic User, level A2) is offered during the autumn semester of 2024. The course is free of charge and no credits will be awarded. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course. More information can be found in the course description:

To be eligible for the course, participants must either be employed at Lund University or enrolled as students at Lund University. Participants should have studied A1 Modern Standard Arabic for Beginners at CMES or have the equivalent level of proficiency.

Application Procedure

Participants should apply to attend the course by sending an email to info [at] cme [dot] lu [dot] se (info[at]cme[dot]lu[dot]se) no later than Wednesday 11 September 2024. Please write “A2 Arabic Course” in the subject line and include the following information:

  • full name;
  • reason for applying (e.g., fieldwork, research, internship); 
  • previous knowledge of the Arabic language; and
  • if you are employed at LU, please include your LUCAT id. If you are a student at LU, please include your date of birth.

B1, Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic, Part I

This 12-week course in Modern Standard Arabic (Advanced User, level B1) will be offered during the autumn semester of 2024. The course is free of charge and no credits will be awarded. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course. More information can be found in the course description:

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the course, participants must either be employed at Lund University or enrolled as students at Lund University. Previous knowledge of Arabic is required and the language level of successful applicants will be assessed before classes commence.

Application Procedure

Participants should apply to attend the course by sending an email to info [at] cme [dot] lu [dot] se (info[at]cme[dot]lu[dot]se) no later than Wednesday 11 September 2024. Please write “B1 Arabic Course” in the subject line and include the following information:

  • full name;
  • reason for applying (e.g., fieldwork, research, internship);
  • previous knowledge of the Arabic language; and
  • if you are employed at LU, please include your LUCAT id. If you are a student at LU, please include your date of birth.
