The Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies supports and coordinates research projects with high scientific potential through the Strategic Research Area (SRA): Middle East in the Contemporary World (MECW). Researchers at Lund University are invited to apply to the following calls:
Writing Retreats (Academic Year 2025)
The Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) supports writing retreats on Middle East research with the aim to finalise an article, book chapter, edited volume or a book for publication in peer reviewed outlets. 4 writing retreats will be granted during the spring or autumn of 2025. CMES offers office space and modern research facilities in a stimulating work environment on historic premises. Administrative, practical, and technical support is available on site.

Research Initiation (Academic Year 2024-2025)
CMES provides seed money for research initiation and preparation of applications for national and international research calls. The aim is to facilitate initial scholarly work and collaboration on the Middle East at the CMES to prepare project applications. Applications are open to employees at Lund University. Grant period: Autumn-Spring 2024-25.

Research Project Proposals (2024-2027)
CMES supports three-year-research projects with high scientific potential through the Strategic Research Area (SRA) Middle East in the Contemporary World (MECW). CMES funds one new project annually and encourages collaboration between scholars from different disciplines at Lund University to conduct interdisciplinary research on the Middle East.

CMES Writing Retreats (Autumn 2024)
CMES supports writing retreats on Middle East research with the aim to finalise an article, book chapter, edited volume or a book for publication in peer-reviewed outlets. CMES offers office space and modern research facilities in a stimulating work environment on historic premises. Administrative, practical and technical support is available on site. Applications for the writing retreats are open to individual researchers that hold doctoral degrees and are employed at Lund University.

CMES Workshop Proposals (Academic Year 2024-2025)
The Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) supports and coordinates workshops and higher public research seminars with high scientific potential through the Strategic Research Area (SRA): Middle East in the Contemporary World (MECW). CMES funds 1-2 new workshop per year and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from different disciplines within Lund University. Workshop proposals should be focused on novel interdisciplinary research questions related to the MECW research program.

Travel Grants for Field Work and Conference/Workshop Participation (Autumn 2024)
CMES provides travel grants for conducting field work in the Middle East and conference/workshop participation with paper presentations focused on Middle East research. Applications are open to employees at Lund University. Grant period: autumn 2023.
